Valentine Morgan is Agent Francis York Morgan's mother. She was a caring woman who deeply loved her husband and son. When York was still young, he witnessed her murder by his father, Brian Xander Morgan. The police were unable to find a motive for the killing.
Spoiler warning: Plot details follow.
During York and Zach's switch and Zach's escape from the Red Room, he discovers that Valentine was actually murdered by Forrest Kaysen. Kaysen had planted his red seeds in her stomach and let a tree sprout, which sucked the life out of her and eventually killed her. She begged for Xander to kill her and prevent the seeds from growing. He was unable to do so and took his own life immediately after she died.
